Final brief submission

 HEYYYY!

This is our final brief I hope you enjoy!

THE FINAL BET

By Mariah Brijinand and Angelina Deus

VFX (Visual Effects)

 Whats uppp!

Today we are completing the final stage of editing, the visual effects.

We wanted to elevate our opening to our fullest ability, and to do that we need visual effects.

With lighting, we enhanced the lighting on some scenes and then on others we made it darker. Especially when the frontman is in the frame, it makes him seem more intimidating.

We did not add blood to our opening because it is not appropriate nor necessary. Instead, we added dust particle when the running scene happens.

Finally, the on screen text. We added various on screen text to make it more trailer like. We add various sayings to add to the suspense as long as the title of our piece and the ending credits.

With the final steps of editing complete, we will revise the edits and fix any errors we encounter. Other than that, we have come to then end of our filming adventure!

Intro Sequence

 HI!

For our intro for our film opening, we want it to be as memorable as possible. We included haunted visuals all while having a minimalistic yet powerful style.

We included shapes, child-like elements, and money-related motifs. By implementing these additions, we make it more like a game setting.

We also used slow panning shots which allowed us to build tension even more by having lingering frames.

Throughout the piece we would drop hints of foreshadowing. We would occasionally drop visual clues without spoiling anything.

From this, we have edited our intro of the opening that will hopefully captivate the audience and set the main theme for our final product.

Pacing the Edit

HI!

Today we will be focusing on helping keeping our audience engaged with our opening.

The strategies we implemented were starting off doing a slow build and drastically moving forward with the payoff. We started first with eerie details, then we made our sequence rapid.

We also used rhythmic editing.

Adding sync cuts with music/sound effects to control the pace was helpful on our overall deign of our film-opening.

Flash cuts and montages were also used to help us engage the readers by giving them context to introduce a backstory.

With all these elements implemented into our opening we captivated the audience's attention and built anticipation for what's next to come.

Sound Design

 HI!

Sound is probably one of the most important aspects of a film, except the scenes (of course). We want to include the right mix of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds to build fear and suspense.

We are going to add a minimalist soundtrack in the background when the scenes of us looking around is happening. It will intensify suspense.

Using abrupt pauses in sound right before a crucial moment will create a sense of curiosity and fear.

We wanted to make the front man's voice distorted as a way to hide his real voice as he wants to stay anonymous. We are also going to ads echoes whenever he appears on screen.

Foley effects are also crucial to add.

We will be adding amplifying footsteps, heartbeats, and breathing for realism.

With our sound design all thought out and complete, it will allow us to move forward with our editing process and increase our film's tension and suspense.

Color Grading

Whats up!

Since color plays a big role in the squid Game, it is important that we add some vibrancy to our piece. From the vibrant childhood like aesthetics to the dark, gruesome contrast, grading is important in establishing a film's tone•

With green and red contrast it reflects the themes of survival. We will add colored effects to represent that. Green is survival and red is danger.

We are also going to add shadows and high contrast to create a moody, ominous atmosphere. We already filmed some scenes in my dim-lit garage but in the more brightly lit scenes, that's where we will focus on adding more shadows and high contrast.

By using color gradients effectively, it enhances the story we are trying to showcase, making our opening more visually appealing.

Crafting suspense

 Hi!

As I stated in my previous blog post, we want to grip the audience instantly. We need to establish tension, mystery, and get the viewers intrigued.

Key Editing Techniques:

  •   Quick Cuts & Jump Cuts: We will include multiple of these cuts to create a sense of
    urgency.
  •   Slow Motion: We will include slow motion takes to highlight moments of danger or realization.
  •   Match Cuts: Using match cuts allow transition between scenes smoothly to help keep the flow engaging.
  •   Jarring Sound Edits: We would include sudden silences or very sharp audio cues that could build suspense.

After deciding what exact cuts and edits we would use to create the

suspense, we then implemented it into our opening. Next we plan on adding color and make our opening more vibrant.

Post-produciton reflection

 Hi!

After filming our opening brief, I feel very accomplished. I have had previous experience with film, so it was a bit easier to accomplish. It did not take us that long to film, as most of the aspects of our brief are completed in the editing stage which we plan on completing next.

For the editing, I will have to teach my partner the basics as she is new to this completely. I will most likely contribute more to the cuts and editing , while she does more of the sound effects.

Plans for editing

Plans for Editing

HI!

Today I will be explaining our plans for editing our brief. As I explained previously Mariah will focus more on the video editing portion, and I will do the on-screen text, sound effects, background music, etc.

We need to incorporate background sound all throughout piece as we want it to give off a creepy, unsettlingly vibe. We also need effects making the mood a bit vibrant since Squid Game has this eerie- kiddy vibe feel to it.

Mariah will be in charge of the different types of cuts and transitions we will have. We filmed on our phones rather than a camera because we found the quality on the phone to be significantly better than the one on the camera surprisingly.

Next we plan on actually completing our editing and documenting it as we go!

Planning #3

HI!

Today, my partner Mariah and I began filming our movie opening. We chose to film at her house since it was simpler. I arrived at her place at 2 PM to start recording. It didn't take us long since we had the script ready.

We filmed the frontman scenes first because I wanted it to be a continuous shot. After finishing all the frontman footage, we started filming the players. It was a bit challenging since we had only one tracksuit jacket, and we needed both of us on camera at the same time. I decided to shoot at an angle that allowed us to both be seen in the tracksuits. After we did that, we moved on to the 2 door scene. It will be edited more in post-production. Most of the film will need to be edited in post-production.

REFLECTION

I will review the footage we filmed today, and if we need more, we will have time to film it.

Costumes

 HI!

My partner and I have started to talk about the costumes that are needed for the film opening. My partner Mariah already had 2 tracksuit pants resembling the Squid Game tracksuits and one tracksuit.

The tracksuits are very important to the essence of the show. We also decided to not wear makeup since none of the characters wear makeup in the show.

This was perfect and one of the small reasons why we chose to do the film opening inspired by Squid Game. For the frontman, we decided for the actor to wear black leggings and a black hoodie and use the hoodie as a mask since we did not have one.

This was it for the costume seeing as we did not have many characters in our film opening.

REFLECTION

The next time, I will write about the experience of filming the opening.

Casting

 Hi!

Since we have finished our script, we are ready to cast some people for our film opening. We have decided that we need only 3 people to be in the film opening. There can be only 2 people with tracksuits and one as the frontman. To make it easier, since the frontman wears a mask, we can have an actor be a player and the frontman.

This makes it more convenient for us since we do not have to cast another actor for the frontman. There is not much personality being shown in the opening, so we have decided to cast my partner and me as the two main characters of the film opening. After this, all we have to worry about is the outfits and filming the rest of the 2 minute film opening.

I apologize for my entry being short, but I do not have much to write.
